Greetings Winter/Spring Runners; Week #16

It was a great weekend for our runs. Willie reported there was a large turnout for Truman on Saturday, even with some local 5k’s going on.  A lot of the group has just about recovered from recent marathons or ultra’s and ready to get back to maintenance and build workouts, while a few are peaking for BOSTON in a couple of weeks.

I am startingto put together the Summer/Fall Moore’s Marines Training Schedule so let me know what marathons/races you have on your radar.

Paula, Christian, and I started the UMSTEAD 100 Mile Run at 6 am Saturday, superbly supported by Cris Eck and Rene Cover.  The temps started about 33 degrees, went up to about 55, and back down to mid-30’s Saturday night/Sunday morning.   Paula (25-ish hrs) and Christian (23-ish hrs) were great, steady, determined, and focused in the face of a level of exertion neither had ever experienced – their words – and both brought back their FIRST 100 MILE RUN buckle!

At 62 miles (18 hrs), I knew the writing was on the wall. Yea, I'm disappointed but time, tide, and CLOCK wait for no man and I finally ran out of time at 62 miles – so I will get a 50 MILE Finish. It was the best I could do at the time, but most importantly, Christian and Paula finished their FIRST 100!!   I preferred to have not finished  and both of them finish than to have finished and one of them had not finished, since I encouraged them to do it. J

Cris and Rene were terrific.  They were out the entire time, trying to keep warm – and occupied – waiting for those few minutes every couple of hours when one of us came through.   We are planning on a “Get-together” in a few weeks because there are some TERRIFIC ‘war stories’ to share. I am repeating the saying at the end of this Weekly Update because it is even more prophetic after having gone through it ‘close up and personal’ J

Lynn and  I will be on a short cruise with my son and daughter-in-law so I will miss running with you this Saturday L

Imagine it’s the morning after your upcoming race, and your gym bag has yet to be unpacked. Despite a hot morning shower. You are curious to see yesterday’s final results. Sitting at your kitchen table, you open your laptop and search for your name. Scanning the pages of results. You take note of your age group finish and the winners’ times, and quickly peek at how close (or far away) you were from being first (or last). Okay, now what?

Your next race may be a few weeks off, but now is the time to consider what will leave you with a lasting feeling that your race experience was worthwhile. Will faster split times determine your success, or are there other, broader ways to mark your achievement? For some of us, victory is tied to goals such as reshaping your body, never walking during the run, or simply finishing. Others have stricter definitions of triumph (and defeat). Undoubtedly, all runners can benefit from clarifying their racing goals. It is an important means of sustaining motivation and enhancing focus, particularly as the demands of training become more challenging.

But, to help make your running truly an enduring positive experience, consider this time-honored advice: Some athletes get so caught up in trying to reach their goals that they confuse the purpose of participating with the goals of participation. In other words, they lose sight of the value of the journey while becoming consumed by their destination. By purpose, I am referring to that inner sense of vitality, excitement, and connectedness that you experience as you train your body to perform at its best. It’s that indestructible feeling you get when everything clicks during a tough workout, and even includes the excitement you may have felt when you finally registered for your upcoming race. You cannot muster those feelings sitting at the computer or watching TV. Ultimately, we do marathons/ultra-marathons/half-marathons/10k’s because they generate those experiences—we do them to feel fully alive.

Many of you have heard me ask you  to “clarify your purpose – WHY are you taking on this goal?” At the same time they set their racing goals. Some athletes post on their calendars, alongside their workout goals, reminders to celebrate just being “in the game.” In this spirit, I hope each of you include in your final determinations about racing to include your “purpose goals” as well as your overall racing goals. So, my hope is that once you have completed your next race, whether you met your “race” goals – or only 62 miles of it J, you can continue to look back on your journey and reconnect with that lasting sense of being in the game.  I know I have to keep reminding myself of the ‘longer journey’ from time to time J
