Greetings Winter Runners; Week #20

The shirts are IN!!.   I will be scoring the Joe Cannon 5k on Saturday but plan to have them at the AHS Track Wednesday and Sunday.  Try to have your $12 so I don’t have keep track, or make out a check to Bluepoint Race Management & Coaching LLC.

Soooo, I needed a way to get registered for the Marine Corps Marathon in October.  I missed the signup last year.  The Marines sponsor an event called the "Run to Register 10K" that I did on Saturday.......automatic entry IF you finish.   Needless to say this was a very Marine oriented event at their base in Quantico, VA.   The run (6.2 miles) started out just fine with the first three miles in the pleasant area along the Potomac River.  Then it went uphill......ugh.  Then it really got interesting.  For the next two miles we (1500 of us) were running on a "trail" up in the hills.  It had just finished raining all night and my 9+ minute miles deteriorated to 14+ minute miles in a sea of mud.  The only thing they could have done to make it a more authentic Marine experience would've been to require us all to carry a 50 lb backpack and run in combat boots!

Anyway, at the finish line they gave me a coded piece of paper that got me in.....

Back to writing computer code...Best, Bill

Happy Birthday to Steve Carton – a new Age Group?

I have set up registration for the follow-on training programs.  In addition to adding programs for Beginning runner and Intermediate Distance (10 Mile, Half Marathon), I have included an Annual Option.   This will allow a single registration to cover both marathon programs and the winter program.  This is a new approach so let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.  The actual schedules will be coming soon but our target races will be ZOOMA Half Marathon, BEN MOORE Half/10k (1 Aug.), A-10, MCM/BALTIMORE/STEAMTOWN/PHILA/NEW YORK Marathons.  The schedule will be tailorable for any Fall marathon.

Wednesday Track Session -   This week we will do 2 x 800 + 4 x 400 at Up Tempo pace with 1 minute rest.  I have  Personal Trainer Cert class so I will not be there.

Saturday Run –  This will be a recovery run for some, a maintenance run for others, and the start of Taper for other.  Cherry Blossom and Cherry Pit are on Sunday. The base mileage is 10 miles. If you are doing either of the Cherry runs, you should still do at least 5 miles with the last 2 miles at race pace.  I am planning on doing Cherry Pit but will be at Truman Saturday morning either way, and will have the shirts.

  If you are planning on doing longer mileage, let me know so we can arrange for support.

Anyone up for some spring cleaning this Saturday, April 4, 9:00 – Noon? 2 great reasons to do it:  1. we have the race on Sunday and 2. we spend a lot of our time running around this area . Project Clean Stream is an annual stream and shoreline clean-up. Last year, more than 3,000 volunteers pitched in at over 115 clean-up sites in central and eastern Maryland.  This event is sponsored by the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay.  Federation locations are:  Bacon Ridge Branch  We will pick up trash along Chesterfield Rd., near Camp Barrett.  Mostly working along the street, but will venture into the woods a bit.  There may be trash down steep slopes. Please click here to visit our web site for directions and parking instructions.    Click here to RSVP for this site - please indicate the site location in your email

Sunday Trail Run – If you are not doing either of the Cherries - 9 am AHS Trails – for one or two loops.  This should NOT be a tempo run.  You ran long on Saturday and do not want to overdo it Sunday, even if it is on the trails. If you are up for some cool down laps, join us with the New Year Beginning Runners on the AHS Track at 11 am.  I know they would love to hear encouragement from others who have “been there, done that” trying to get started running.

“He’s soft and he’s fat and his hair is turning grey and he’s wearing my clothes and he’s getting too old and he was born on my birthday – and I am afraid if I stop running, he’ll catch up with me – but not today, not today”   Guess who :-)

Stay Healthy;

Ron
